Massachusetts congresswoman, Ayanna Pressley, has reintroduced a bill requiring Medicare to pay for wigs for those experiencing hair loss due to medical treatments or disease. Because Medicare
considers wigs to be cosmetic, they aren’t covered under Original Medicare Part A or B, even with a doctor’s prescription. If passed, the bill would recategorize cranial prosthetics as durable medical equipment, making them eligible for coverage under the Social Security Act. “Every person living with alopecia, battling cancer, or facing another medical condition that leads to hair loss, should be able to access wigs and other head coverings,” she said in an interview with Vanity Fair.
